Unveiling Ciucaș: A Mountain Peony Trek to the 1954m Summit

Vertical Xplore extends a warm invitation to embark on an unforgettable natural adventure on July 22, 2023. Our chosen destination is the magnificent Ciucaș Mountains, renowned as one of Romania’s most picturesque and approachable mountain ranges.

Within the breathtaking Ciucaș massif, you’ll be captivated by dramatic landscapes teeming with a vibrant diversity of wild mountain peonies, especially in their blooming season. Our journey will reveal an array of impressive geological formations and towering peaks, including the iconic Porumbelul (The Pigeon), Cutiile Bratocei, Sfinxul Bratocei, Vârful Bratocea at 1844 meters, and the formidable Tigăile Mari and Turnu Roșu.

Path Description:

On the morning of July 22, 2023 (exact meeting time to be confirmed with registered participants), our group will gather at the Bratocea Pass (DN1A) parking area. From there, we will commence our ascent, following the trail marked with a red stripe. Our initial path leads us past Stana Bratocea (which we will skirt around), then towards distinctive rock formations such as Porumbelul and Cutiile Bratocei. We will steadily climb towards Vârful Bratocea, reaching its impressive elevation of 1844 meters. Following this ascent, we will descend to take a well-deserved rest at Șaua Tigăilor, situated at 1745 meters.

From this vantage point, we will have spectacular views of Tigăile Goliat and Turnu Roșu (Red Tower). Here, we’ll take time to refuel with snacks and hydrate before continuing our trek through the protected Tigaile Nature Reserve, making our way to the summit of Vârful Ciucaș, the highest peak at 1954 meters. After celebrating our achievement and capturing memorable photographs, we will navigate a rocky section that reveals more striking formations, including the “Fata în Fașă.” Our route then gently descends towards Tigăile Mari, where our path intersects with a trail marked by a Red Cross.

Turning right, we will follow the Red Cross marked route through the stunning Tigaile Ciucaș Reserve, a prime location to admire the beautiful mountain peonies in bloom. We will continue along this trail until we reach Saua Tigăilor once more, from where we will retrace our steps on the original Red Stripe trail, leading us directly back to the Pasul Bratocea parking area.
