Greetings, fellow adventurers! I’m Sorin, a seasoned mountain guide with Edumont, and today we’re delving into the magic of a special place in the Bucegi Mountains: the renowned Malaiești Cabin. (Often referred to as Murniant Cottage in some contexts).

Where is Malaiești Cabin Located?
Malaiești Cabin is nestled in the northern sector of the majestic Bucegi Mountains, specifically within the Malaiești Valley, dramatically set against the imposing walls of Mount Bucșoiu.
It stands proudly at an elevation of 1720 meters above sea level, close to the picturesque area known as Padina Crucii.
To provide some perspective, from this point, a challenging ascent of approximately 800 meters in altitude will lead you to Omu Peak, the highest summit in the Bucegi Massif.
Crucially, the cabin is situated within a protected natural area – the Bucegi Natural Park, specifically encompassing the Abbarul Bucuraia nature reserve, along with the Malaiești and Gaura sectors. This ensures its pristine environment is preserved.
Its strategic mountain position grants breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Postăvaru and the iconic Piatra Mare.
Access to Malaiești Cabin is exclusively on foot; motorized vehicles are strictly prohibited within the Bucegi Natural Park, an area zealously protected by law. The cabin’s provisions are traditionally transported with the aid of horses, a sight you might even witness during the summer months.
It’s important to set expectations: this is not a luxury retreat like some modern lodges. Do not anticipate five-star amenities. For instance, the restroom facilities are located outdoors, typical of a true mountain refuge.
The spirit of Malaiești reflects authentic mountain values: communal campfires, guitar melodies, traditional mountain songs, warming mulled wine, and hearty bean soup. This experience caters to genuine mountain enthusiasts, not those seeking high-end comforts.
Is the Trek to Malaiești Cabin Difficult?
No, the trail itself is not inherently difficult in a technical sense.
However, it’s also not a stroll in the park. Hikers, especially those new to trekking or with a sedentary lifestyle, should be prepared.
In our guiding experience, we classify it as a medium-difficulty route.
The trail involves a total elevation gain and loss of 780 meters over a 10 km round trip.
For a reasonably fit individual, allow approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to 3 hours for the ascent, and a similar duration of 2 to 3 hours for the descent.
What is the Easiest Route to Malaiești Cabin?
Malaiești Cabin can be approached from several starting points, including Râșnov, Bușteni, Predeal, Azuga, and Pârâul Rece.
Most of these routes are considerably long, physically demanding, and less suitable for beginner hikers.
The most straightforward and recommended path departs from Râșnov, specifically from the Glăjăriei Valley, and is clearly marked. It follows this sequence:
- Poiana Buhacu (or Bunacu)
- Glăjăriei Valley
- Izvorul Malaiești (Malaiești Spring)
- Valea Malaiești (Malaiești Valley)
This particular route features no exposed sections, making it accessible even for those with a fear of heights.
Essential Hiking Equipment
The necessary equipment is highly variable, dependent on both the season and individual needs.
Responsible hikers prioritize safety and comfort by researching and equipping themselves appropriately for mountain excursions.
For detailed guidance, I’ve previously authored two articles on mountain equipment for easy and medium-difficulty treks:
- “The Most Affordable Equipment for Summer Hiking”
- “The Most Affordable Equipment for Winter Excursions”
Unfortunately, some individuals venture into the mountains inadequately prepared, wearing inappropriate city attire.
Is this advisable? Absolutely not. I addressed this critical issue in an article titled “Considering City Clothes for Your Mountain Trip? Here’s Why It’s a Bad Idea!”
Are There Bears in the Area?
This is, without a doubt, one of the most common questions I encounter as a mountain guide. And while understandable, it’s often rooted in misconception.
My answer is always clear:
As guides, whenever we embark on a trip to Malaiești (or any mountain journey), we are always prepared for a potential encounter with a brown bear. This includes carrying bear spray and possessing the necessary knowledge to handle such a situation safely.

That being said, despite visiting Malaiești dozens of times across summer, autumn, and winter, I have personally never encountered a bear on the trail.
However, this doesn’t preclude the possibility of an encounter at some point in the future.

Video Highlights
As I finalized this article, I realized I haven’t widely shared many videos from Malaiești publicly. This is something I definitely need to remedy, as I have plenty of footage waiting to be uploaded!
Below, you can watch a video from November 2024, featuring our wonderful group of tourists during our visit:
Additionally, here’s a winter vlog from Omu Peak that includes a segment showcasing Malaiești Cabin. Skip to the 2-minute mark for the cabin footage!
