Our journey commences at Botorog’s Fountain, where vehicles can be conveniently parked. After securing our entry permit for Piatra Craiului National Park (a 10 lei fee valid for 7 days), we’ll embark on the trail marked with the yellow band, perfect for an autumn adventure.
A moderate ascent of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes brings us to the picturesque Zanoaga Meadow. Here, breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Piatra Craiului ridge await, offering ample opportunities to immerse ourselves in nature and capture stunning photographs.
Continuing on relatively gentle paths for another 45 minutes, we reach the Cantate Chalet (1470m), marking the most straightforward segment of our trek. This is an ideal spot for an extended break, perhaps indulging in their renowned apple cake with ‘Ravas’ (a local delicacy).
Refreshed, we’ll resume our journey, following the red-point trail towards Saua Crapaturii (Crack Saddle), an approximately 40-minute segment. Upon reaching the saddle, we’ll turn right, transitioning onto the blue-dot trail. This path winds through a fragrant coniferous forest, gradually ascending. After about 100 meters, we emerge into a scree-covered clearing featuring an informative panel. Here, we’ll navigate the natural gully, arriving at the base of Piatra Mica’s western face. The subsequent ascent is short but challenging, traversing equipped sections with safety cables and some mildly exposed areas. Despite its demands, this part of the route is very well-maintained. Beyond the cables, we gain the alpine crest, continuing along the contour line, passing through fragrant juniper bushes, all leading to the summit of Piatra Mica (1816m). From this vantage point, a spectacular panoramic vista unfolds, encompassing Zarnesti, the Barsei Valley, the distinct Persani Mountains, and the majestic Bucegi Mountains.
Our descent follows the blue-dot trail through the forest, leading us back to Zanoaga Meadow. From there, we retrace our steps along the initial path, returning to our parked vehicles at Botorog’s Fountain.
