Scara Refuge (2146 m) – Perched at an elevation of 2146 meters, the newly constructed Scara Refuge stands as a modern beacon for hikers in the Făgăraș Mountains. Spanning 36 square meters, this metallic structure offers comfortable overnight stays for 15-18 individuals. Its thoughtful design includes two distinct functional zones: a welcoming vestibule that acts as a thermal buffer, and a communal area. Renowned for its pristine condition, this shelter sets a high standard for mountain accommodations.
Călțun Refuge (2150 m) – A vital sanctuary within the Făgăraș range, the Călțun Refuge is strategically positioned at 2150 meters, gracing the shores of Lake Călțun. This metallic, compact shelter, capable of accommodating approximately 20 people in a relatively confined space, is crucial for those venturing near prominent peaks like Negoiu and Lăița. While offering basic, “Spartan” living conditions, it provides invaluable safety and shelter, particularly during extreme weather events or fierce storms, given its exposed and wind-swept location.

Refuge of the Dragon’s Window (2068 m) – Nestled in a remote and picturesque spot adjacent to the spectacular rock formation known as the Dragon’s Window (Fereastra Zmeilor), this refuge, at 2068 meters, is a simple yet essential haven. Designed as a temporary shelter for hikers caught in adverse weather or seeking an overnight stop, it boasts a strategic location on the Făgăraș ridge. It serves critical mountain routes connecting major peaks such as Moldoveanu. Built with minimalism in mind, the refuge provides basic wooden sleeping platforms for a limited number of people (around 12 seats) and lacks immediate water sources. Despite its exposure to strong winds, it remains a crucial safety point on the long and demanding trails of the Făgăraș Mountains.
Vistea Mare Refuge (2310 m) – Standing at a towering 2310 meters, the Vistea Mare Refuge is an indispensable waypoint for trekkers traversing the Făgăraș Mountains’ main ridge. Located at the base of Vistea Mare Peak, Romania’s third-highest summit, it offers a crucial resting spot before the challenging final ascent to Moldoveanu Peak. With a capacity for 10 occupants, this refuge received significant attention on September 21, 2024. Mountain volunteer services undertook extensive renovation and repair, enhancing both its structural integrity and interior comfort. These vital works reinforced the refuge, ensuring it is better equipped to provide secure shelter, underscoring the critical role of maintaining infrastructure in these wild Carpathian landscapes.
Sâmbetei Refuge (2196 m) – At an altitude of 2196 meters, the Sâmbetei Refuge in the Făgăraș Mountains is a key stopping point for those navigating the high-alpine routes. Situated near “Fereastra Mică a Sâmbetei” (The Small Window of Sâmbăta), it offers crucial protection in an exposed area where rugged trails meet expansive Făgăraș vistas. On September 21, 2024, the dedicated “At the Service of the Mountain” team embarked on a comprehensive renovation. This initiative included reinforcing the structure, replacing the roof, and improving interior conditions to better shield trekkers. Now robustly upgraded to withstand severe weather, the refuge continues its role as a safe and essential haven for ridge-crossers, offering accommodation for 12 people.
Zârna Refuge (1936 m) – The Zârna Refuge, an alpine shelter nestled at 1936 meters in the Făgăraș Mountains, lies close to Curmătura Zârnei (Zârna Pass). It marks an important point on the Făgăraș ridge route, offering sanctuary amidst picturesque, relatively isolated landscapes far from urban centers. Characterized by a simple, high-mountain style, this wooden shelter provides basic rest and minimal protection from harsh weather. With a modest capacity of about 10 people, its conditions are rudimentary, lacking running water or modern facilities. However, a natural spring nearby offers a convenient water source for hikers. Its strategic position makes Zârna Refuge a common rest stop before adventurers proceed to other significant Făgăraș destinations, such as Moldoveanu Peak or Fereastra Mare a Sâmbetei (The Great Window of Sâmbăta).
Brana Caprelor Refuge (2122 m) – This simple mountain refuge, located at 2122 meters, has long served hikers exploring a spectacular region of the Făgăraș range. However, years of exposure to severe conditions have taken their toll, diminishing its effectiveness as a safe haven. In response, the Carpathian Mountain Association has launched an ambitious project to construct a new, modern refuge, designed to mirror the quality of the Scara Refuge. The planned facility will offer 25-27 sleeping places across two rooms: a main room with 20 primary bunks and 2-4 emergency spots, and a secondary room with 3 beds dedicated to Salvamont (Mountain Rescue) crews. A small vestibule will also enhance the entrance. This significant upgrade will vastly improve upon the old refuge’s tiny capacity of just 2-3 people.
Berivoiescu Refuge (2262 m) – Situated at 2262 meters, the Berivoiescu Refuge provides a rustic and straightforward shelter against the elements, including strong winds, rain, and snow. It features a simple wooden sleeping platform, accommodating several individuals with basic comfort. Hikers are advised to carry essential equipment like sleeping bags and insulated pads. Given its exposed location, the refuge does not have immediate access to drinking water, requiring trekkers to transport water from lower altitudes or collect it from natural sources along their route. While conditions can be challenging, especially in winter, Berivoiescu Refuge remains a critical emergency shelter for those venturing into this demanding terrain.
Comisu Refuge (1865 m) – Perched at 1865 meters on the southern slope of the Făgăraș Mountains, near Comisu Peak 2011, this alpine refuge is a cherished spot for hikers and climbers alike. It offers a well-maintained resting place and a secure retreat amidst the untamed wilderness. The Comisu Refuge provides 6-8 comfortable sleeping spots, ideally suited for accommodating trekkers. Surrounded by breathtaking mountain vistas and offering special views of the Făgăraș crest, it captivates nature enthusiasts and adventurers. It serves as an excellent base from which to explore the region and immerse oneself in the majestic beauty of the Făgăraș Mountains.
