Welcome, fellow adventurers! This past weekend, my companions and I embarked on an exciting journey into the majestic Făgăraș Mountains. Our mission: to seek out the renowned shepherd, Ciabanu ‘Buteanu’, and marvel at his flock.
Our ascent began promptly at 9 AM, from the Bâlea Lac cabin. The biting mountain wind was relentless, slicing through even five layers of clothing, a stark reminder of the harsh alpine conditions.
After a challenging two-hour trek, navigating the formidable Capra Saddle, we finally arrived at Buteanu’s high-altitude refuge – his ‘home’ amidst the peaks, perched at an impressive 2,507 meters above sea level.
We were sure we’d find him. But instead: great disappointment, Buteanu had gone.
Intriguingly, we discovered a remote control – perhaps for a portable media player – near an elevated ledge. It was still warm, suggesting his departure had been very recent. However, a thick, pervasive mist, as captured in the accompanying photos, severely limited visibility, making it impossible to discern his direction.
Undeterred, we immediately initiated an extensive search operation.
Leaving his temporary abode, we quickly ascended Capra Peak. He wasn’t there, but we did find a peculiar clue: the faint scent of freshly popped popcorn, reminiscent of a popular streaming series. This hinted that we were still on his trail.
Feeling we were on the right track, we descended to the Capra Saddle at 2,315 meters, meticulously searching near the mountaineer’s monument on the serene bank of Lake Capra.
Still no sign of him.
Then came a thought: «He must be on the ridge, soaking in the grandeur of these mountains.» So, with renewed determination, we pressed on, following the winding path that eventually leads towards Moldoveanu Peak.
Periodically, we’d shout out:
«Buteanu! Buteanu! We have those special provisions you enjoy!»
Our enthusiastic calls, however, were met with an unexpected response: a rapid thumping from a nearby rock crevice. Two sleepy marmots, disturbed by our shouts, clearly wanted their peace. We promptly lowered our voices.
By the time we reached Porta Arpașului, it was already 3 PM. Our search continued to yield nothing.
As dusk approached, we reluctantly called off the search. Exhausted but undeterred, we headed back to the Bâlea cabin, where a comforting bowl of hot soup awaited, a perfect end to a long day.
Though Buteanu remained elusive this time, our spirits are unbroken. We vow to return to these magnificent mountains, week after week if necessary, until we finally meet the Făgăraș shepherd and witness his flock.
Reflecting on Our High-Altitude Făgăraș Quest
This expedition, while not culminating in a meeting with Buteanu, was an unforgettable testament to the raw beauty and challenging conditions of the Făgăraș Mountains. Our journey vividly highlighted:
-
The Demanding Ascent: Kicking off at 9:00 AM from the Bâlea Lac cabin, we battled a truly “penetrating” wind. The necessity of donning five layers of clothing underscored the severe cold and exposure inherent to such altitudes, even in the morning hours.
-
The Lofty Destination: After an arduous two-hour traverse, we reached our intended goal: Buteanu’s high-alpine “home,” situated near the Capra Saddle.
-
Extreme Altitude: Ascending to a remarkable 2,507 meters above sea level confirmed our presence deep within the unforgiving alpine zone, where both wind and weather fiercely test endurance.
Indeed, it was a truly profound experience, connecting with the formidable landscape and reinforcing our desire to eventually encounter the shepherd and his sheep in this magnificent, rugged wilderness.
