Agur eta ongi etorri Euskal Herrira! (Welcome to the Basque Country!)

Stretching from Hendaye to Biarritz, the Basque coast offers the perfect setting for your surf adventure, alongside endless opportunities to explore its vibrant culture and breathtaking natural beauty.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, this approximately thirty-kilometer-long coastline boasts numerous fantastic spots for an unforgettable surf getaway. You truly don’t need to travel across the globe to find world-class waves!

Is this your inaugural surf trip to the Basque Coast, or perhaps your very first time on a board? Hendaye is an ideal starting point. Its gentle, accessible waves and shallow, sloping beach create perfect conditions for beginners, allowing you to learn and progress in a safe and enjoyable environment.

Exploring Beyond the Waves: The Spanish Basque Coast

No visit to the Basque Country is complete without experiencing the vibrant charm of its Spanish counterpart! For those who prefer a relaxed journey, the seamless Euskotren tram connects Hendaye station directly to San Sebastián city center, helping you avoid traffic and parking hassles.

Once you arrive in the Spanish Basque Country, take time to wander through San Sebastián’s enchanting Old Town (Parte Vieja), explore its three beautiful city beaches (La Concha, Ondarreta, and Zurriola), or dive into the lively Gros district. Be sure to indulge in the legendary pintxos – delicious, bite-sized culinary creations perfect for a gastronomic stroll.

Local’s Tip: If you decide to drive to the Spanish Basque Country, consider a memorable culinary stop at La Casa Cámara in Pasai Donibane (Pasaia). This unique family restaurant keeps its fresh lobsters and other seafood in a natural seawater pool right in the dining room, ensuring an unparalleled dining experience.

After satisfying your taste buds, return to the French Basque Country. A scenic bike ride along the Hendaye-Saint-Jean-de-Luz coastal path offers spectacular panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, making for a perfect afternoon activity.

Often overlooked compared to their more famous neighbors, the charming towns of Guéthary and Bidart are true havens of peace. Away from the peak tourist bustle, these hidden gems are cherished by those in the know. Here, you can enjoy the waves in tranquility, making them ideal destinations for a relaxing family surf trip in the Basque Country.

Inland Adventures: La Rhune and Beyond

La Rhune: The Mythical Summit of the Basque Country

Stepping away from the bustling Basque beaches, venture inland to discover the iconic peak of La Rhune. Rising 905 meters above sea level, its summit offers absolutely breathtaking panoramic views stretching from the Pyrenees to the Atlantic coast, encompassing Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Biarritz.

For adventurous hikers, a challenging yet rewarding trek to the top takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, involving an elevation gain of over 700 meters. Alternatively, head to the charming village of Sare, officially recognized as one of France’s most beautiful villages. From here, you can take the historic Little Train of La Rhune (€18 return for adults), enjoying a leisurely ascent through picturesque landscapes while absorbing the progressively stunning vistas.

While in Sare, don’t miss the opportunity to explore its prehistoric caves (Grottes de Sare), one of the most popular historical sites in the Basque Country, offering a fascinating journey into the region’s ancient past.

Coastal Charms and Surf Mecca: Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Biarritz

Saint-Jean-de-Luz remains an unmissable gem in the Basque panorama. Lose yourself strolling through its charming, serene streets, soaking in the atmosphere of this elegant “large village.” For those with a sweet tooth, a visit to Maison Adam on Place Louis XIV to savor their legendary macarons is an absolute must – a true taste of local history.

Beyond surfing, another popular activity in the Basque Country is golf. Even if you’re not a golfer, the stunning scenery of courses like Chiberta in Biarritz makes them worth a detour for a leisurely walk or simply to admire the views.

Biarritz, globally celebrated for its diverse and consistent waves, has been firmly established as Europe’s surf capital since the 1950s. It stands as an essential destination to connect with fellow surf enthusiasts and immerse yourself in the vibrant surf culture. Each year, passionate board riders and leading figures from both French and international surfing scenes converge here, creating an electrifying atmosphere.

Biarritz Nights and Bayonne’s Historic Charm

Biarritz: Post-Surf Vibes

After a thrilling surf session, explore the vibrant city of Biarritz. Conclude your day with a spectacular sunset view from the iconic Côte des Basques beach, ideally accompanied by a refreshing glass of Txakoli, the region’s delightful sparkling white wine.

Local’s Tip: For a unique late-night culinary experience in Biarritz, head to “La Cave” (The Cellar). This atmospheric restaurant, located near Les Halles, opens from 10 PM and is famous for its delectable small omelets featuring fresh ceps (porcini mushrooms).

Culture and History in Bayonne

Last but certainly not least, a visit to Bayonne is an absolute must when in the Basque Country. Its charming, narrow alleys come alive with unparalleled energy during the famous Fêtes de Bayonne (Bayonne Festival) at the end of July, promising an unforgettable weekend. (For reference, the Bayonne Festival traditionally begins on the Wednesday before the first weekend of August).

However, even outside of festival season, Bayonne is well worth your time. Take a leisurely stroll through its historic center to immerse yourself in the rich history of this fortified city, admiring its distinct character and architectural beauty.
